How many questions are in the STS exam?
The STS test is the longest standard drone theory exam for commercial pilots.
1. The official STS format
The STS theory exam presents 60 questions with 60 minutes allowed. The pass threshold is 75%, so your practical target should be at least 48-50 correct answers in practice.
The number of questions is double that of A2, so consistent pacing has a much bigger impact on your STS result. Knowledge alone, without time control, is often not enough.
2. What STS questions test
STS focuses on procedural scenarios and risk management. The candidate has to apply rules in practical situations rather than just recall terms.
The large number of questions lets the exam test broader context, so systematic, topic-by-topic preparation beats random practice.
3. The pacing rule in a 60/60 exam
The average target is about 1 minute per question. If you get stuck, flag the question and move on, so there is time left at the end for review.
A2STS simulations let you train exactly this rhythm. A few repeated timed attempts often have a bigger effect than long theory reading.
4. A practical preparation model
Spend the first week on thematic blocks, the second on intermediate tests, and the third onwards on full STS simulations. This model manages fatigue and ensures a stable result.
Register for the official exam only once several full sessions show a solid result above 80%. This reduces the risk of having to resit.
5. How to plan after you pass
After a successful result, set up a theory-maintenance routine straight away so your knowledge doesn't fade. In commercial work this helps you respond faster to new projects.
A2 and STS qualifications are planned around a 5-year cycle, so it is practical to schedule renewal in your calendar in advance.
