STS-01 and STS-02: exam questions and preparation
Standard Scenarios (STS) define pre-approved specific-category operations. STS-01 and STS-02 are the most common paths for commercial remote pilots in the EU.
1. What STS-01 and STS-02 cover
STS-01 supports VLOS operations in a controlled ground area with limited overflight of uninvolved persons.
STS-02 supports BVLOS operations with observers or technical means to maintain situational awareness.
Both require theoretical knowledge assessment and practical skills before operations can begin.
2. STS theoretical exam structure
The standard STS theoretical exam has 60 questions in 60 minutes with a 75 % pass mark (45 correct). It is longer and deeper than A2.
Questions emphasise procedures, risk mitigation and operational decision-making under realistic constraints.
- Operational procedures and checklists
- Risk assessment and mitigation
- Airspace and coordination
- Human factors in complex operations
- Technical redundancy and lost-link procedures
3. How to study STS scenarios
Learn each scenario's operational volume, maximum height and mitigation requirements before attempting timed tests.
Map STS rules to real mission types you plan to fly - that makes abstract questions easier to answer.
4. Practice with full simulations
Run full 60/60 simulations weekly once topic tests are stable. Track accuracy by section to find weak procedural areas.
A2STS STS modules include explanations that clarify why the safest regulatory option is correct.
5. After STS theory
Theory is only one part of specific-category authorisation. Plan practical training and operational documentation alongside exam prep.
Keep qualifications current with periodic review and a 5-year renewal mindset from the start.
