A2 vs STS: which drone certificate do you need?

A2 and STS are not interchangeable. They cover different operational scenarios, so many commercial operators eventually need both.

1. The essential difference between A2 and STS

A2 belongs to the open category and is designed for operations where you need to fly closer to uninvolved persons than A3 limits allow. It is the common path for photographers, real estate, and inspection services.

STS (Standard Scenarios) belongs to the specific category with declared operational scenarios and greater operational depth. It matters when open-category limits no longer fit real commercial missions.

2. Exam structure and difficulty

A2 format: 30 questions in 30 minutes, 75 % pass threshold. STS format: 60 questions in 60 minutes, also 75 %. STS is longer and more often tests procedural thinking.

A2 is typically taken as an intermediate step after A1/A3. STS usually requires sustained work on risk scenarios, so preparation takes longer.

3. How to decide which to take first

If your work fits within open-category limits, starting with A2 is rational. If you already know you need declared specific-category scenarios, plan STS alongside or shortly after A2.

The most effective path in practice: A1/A3 → A2 → STS. This builds theory progressively with less repetition.

  • Hobby and basic commercial work: A1/A3 + A2
  • Complex commercial missions: A1/A3 + A2 + STS
  • Unclear case: start with A2, then add STS as needed

4. Efficient preparation for both exams

A2STS supports dual-track study: train A2 and STS topics separately, then run periodic combined review simulations. This maintains continuity between categories.

When preparing for both, set weekly goals: one week focus on A2 pacing, the next on deeper STS questions. Results stabilise faster than chaotic mixed study.

5. Where the official assessment takes place

A2STS is a preparation platform. Official theoretical knowledge assessments are administered by your National Aviation Authority (NAA). Train in a format as close as possible to the real exam before booking.

After passing, plan qualification renewal in advance. A2 and STS certificates are generally managed on a 5-year cycle under applicable EASA rules.

Can I take STS without A2?
It depends on your operational needs, but most operators first complete A1/A3 and A2 before moving to STS.
Which is harder - A2 or STS?
STS is generally considered more demanding due to double the question count and more procedural scenarios. A2 is often passed sooner.
Is it worth preparing for both in one year?
Yes, if you plan broader commercial missions. A2STS lets you structure a combined plan and track progress across both paths.
Where is the official exam held?
At your National Aviation Authority (NAA). Platforms such as A2STS help you prepare before registration.
